Yesterday (Friday) we decided to spend another night at Cave Lake. So we headed out and wanted to visit the Ward Charcoal Ovens..they were built in 1861 and they are pretty amazing! It was a 10 mile gravel road ride out there but a pretty one at that! Didn't take long to see them but we enjoyed the drive and seeing them..one more off the bucket list!
Total of 6 ovens all in a row ... |
Each oven is 30 feet high and 27 feet in diameter.. |
Each oven held 35 cords of wood to fill the oven and would produce about 1750 bushels of charcoal. |
Looking up inside the oven..top hole and upper door that looks like a window..then they would seal the upper door and lower door |
Three levels of steam vents. |
Looking at one of the vents from the inside... |
Our fire last night...and sunset... |
Cave Lake...beautiful little lake with lots of fish! |
Highway 50 coming towards Great Basin NP |
