Custer State Park and the Needles Highway!

Saw this today! Love it! So true!

Yesterday we moved from Sturgis to Custer, South Dakota so we'd be closer to Custer State Park and the Hill City area.  We headed for a Passport America park that I talked to the day before. Well, don't go there. We went in and she said they had a sight for 1 night (which I knew before) hoping that maybe there would still be an open site the next day.  We said Passport America and she said that the listing was wrong and it was still full prices. The one I talked to the day before said Passport America was fine. hmmm..ok what's the price $41.50 + tax. Uh no. Looking at the park no thanks..there's tons of others in the area.

I made a few phone calls and found Custer Crazy Horse Campground.  It used to be a KOA obviously.  $45.00 a night full hook ups.  We saw it on the way in and knew it was a nice park.  Went in and she was the nicest woman. Talked quite a bit about her RV park they bought 5 years ago. They finally made enough money to make improvements and it's a really nice park!  At the end she asked if we were military, police, fire etc.  I told her I retired from the Sheriff's Department so we got $9.00 off our 2 day bill.  $88.00 out the door including tax. Well worth it.  They only fill every other campsite, so it's like having 2 campsites for the price of one.

Got ourselves settled and had lunch.  Then we took off to Custer State Park just a few miles away.  Again, we had been here several years ago.  Times have changed...we were one of the only people driving through the park..but no more!

We paid our $20.00 for 1 to 7 days of visiting the park.  Decided to take the Needles drive and OH WOW! If this is the only drive you do in this park, it's worth the $20.00!!

The colors are a changing!

There she is!

Pactola Lake...

Love this!

Love this home!

I could live here too...

Our spot here! 💙

We got home and got the Little Red Campfire out for a beautiful fire.  Well, a bit later it started raining so we went inside..then it quit so we went back outside..then it rained more and that was it..back inside.  Thunder and lightening..very cool. During the night we heard lots of rain 😊 So we have to come to South Dakota for rain..ok..

Today was busy, but this is long enough so hopefully I can get the  blog up tomorrow as we plan on being at Devil's Tower in Wyoming...guess we have to start heading home 😞

Part of today's adventure..Firehouse Brewery...

We got back to camp tonight and Ken got the Little Red Campfire started so we enjoyed a couple of hours outside.  Temps are cool...it's 42 feels like 39..glad we are in the Mansion!

I think we've decided to head for Custer in the  am and have breakfast out. It's a treat we don't do often but this way we won't need lunch as we travel to Devil's tower. I so want Ken to barbecue tomorrow night! 😀
Have a great evening!

  1. Beautiful country up there. Even prettier when covered in snow!! Much as I like cheap campsites, sometimes it's nice to splurge ... and you still got a good price.

  2. I miss rocky peaks in my pictures, SD or AZ, just let us get there!
Looks like a lovely spot you found in that park. we don't mind paying the price if we get what we pay for. That first park sounded fishy from the start, glad you moved on. ;)

  3. Needles is one of our favorite drives. You think it is beautiful now, you should see it with snow!
